State of the art
Vascular prostheses can either be of biological origin or can be produced from synthetic material. Biological prostheses offer the advantage that they are not recognized by the patient as a foreign body and hence the ingestion of medication like anticoagulants can be avoided. In comparison to the state of the art, the invention allows for the production of complex bifurcated vascular prostheses from degradable polymers that serve as scaffolds for the body’s own cells.
The invention concerns a process for the production of bifurcated vascular prostheses by the polymer-processing technology electrospinning. For this purpose, a collector was designed that consisted of three mandrels of which two were hollow and could be fixed to the main collector by means of threaded rods.
The invention presents the advantage that the vascular prosthesis has a material structure that when seeded with cells from the body, possesses all the functions of the original tissue and does not act as a foreign body.
