VariDrain: Adjustable Drainage
Drainages serve for the removement of fluids from body cavities by transluminal or percutaneous access. The size of the fluid-filled cavity can change during treatment, and consequently the length of the drainage needs to be adjusted. Current commercially available drainages have a predetermined geometry and length, or must be perforated and cut to the required length prior to use.
VariDRAIN has been developed in order to increase the variability of drainage geometry and power.
The invented drainage consists of two concentric tubes, which can be shifted against each other. According to require-ments the tubes can be rigid or flexible and preshaped in a broad range of variants. The outer tube is perforated and the particular holes can be selectively closed or opened by shifting the inner tube.
Thereby, the operator is able to adjust the length and power of the drainage according to the anatomic conditions and the course of the treatment. This invention thereby has significant advantages as compared to current commercially available drainage systems with regard to the variation range and capabilities.
